The Everest Base Camp trek for beginners is easy but it needs some preparation. Such as attaining optimal physical and mental fitness, buying required equipment, and prior physical training.
The Everest Base Camp Trek is about 130 km long and you reach a maximum altitude of 5,550 meters. The hike is entirely on foot and you are entirely dependent on your fitness and health level. So make sure you achieve a good level of physical fitness in the weeks before your trip.
You can create a fitness routine that involves walking as much as possible and riding your bike often. Everything works cycling, jogging, running stairs, rowing, and swimming; anything that improves your stamina and strength.
Prepare for this by climbing the surrounding hills and mountains and hiking for as many days in a row as possible. Regular runs are ideal, with the intensity and length constantly increasing – from 5 to 10 to 15 km about 2 to 3 times a week for 10 weeks before departure.
Additionally, a strong mental state is a must for this trek. There are many examples of trekkers who have not obtained any physical training before the trek. But with a strong and positive mindset, they completed this trek easily which they are proud of. So meditation, relaxing in calm music, and listening to motivational videos are some helpful tips for a positive and strong attitude.
We recommend not to carry unnecessary loads in your bag. As it will be an overweight and burden for porters. Also, you will be taking a domestic flight to Lukla, for which there is a 15 kg weight limit. So carry only those gears and equipment that are essential for the trip.
We advise you to carry a good pair of trekking shoes. Because you will be hiking for 3 to 5 hours a day. Also, pack suitable clothes to keep you warm during very cold weather. Weather can be unpredictable in high elevations so we recommend you pack:
Note: we have already mentioned some of the gear and equipment we are providing for the trek. Please go through our Inclusion list.
Beginners embarking on the Everest Base Camp trek should go for a well-planned and organized training routine at least 2 months before the trek. As mentioned in the first point, physical health is of utmost importance. Since you as a beginner don’t have trekking experience, it will help the guide and porter if you are not exhausted after walking for an hour.
So opt for some cardiovascular exercises such as jogging, walking and climbing. You can also do squats and lunges to make your legs strong. Gradually increase your training duration say from 30 minutes to 45 minutes the next week and to an hour the other week.
You also include uphill and downhill walks to prepare for the Nepalese terrain. When walking, carry your backpack with some weight in it so you can get accustomed to the routine of your trek.
The best months to trek to Everest Base Camp for beginners is from March to May and from September to November. The spring season takes over the days of March to April when the average temperature in the Everest region ranges from -1 to 15°C. The day is dry, the sun shines for a long time and mountain views are clear and unobstructed.
Likewise, the days from September to November are featured with the autumn/fall season. During these months, the temperature in the Everest region ranges between 12°C-16°C. the nighttime can be quite cold falling to -8 °C. These are the best seasons when you can spot rare species of musk deer, snow leopard, and red panda. You will walk through the thick blooming pinkish-red forest of rhododendron, birch, and juniper.
Although this trek is doable in winter months (December to February) and summer months (June to August). But we don’t recommend this trek for beginners. The winter days can present harsh weather conditions when the temperature can drop down to a bone-chilling -14 degrees Celsius. In summer, the occurrence of avalanches in Everest Base Camp and muddy trails along the way can hinder the smooth trek experience. These seasons are favorable for hard-core people who like things to be a little quieter and less busy.
For you to trek to Everest Base Camp, you only need two types of permits: Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit and Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit.
Everest Base Camp lies in Sagarmatha National Park. In 1979, UNESCO listed this park as a World Heritage Site. Therefore, the park is a restricted zone for which you need an entry permit.
You can purchase this permit from the National Tourism Board office of Kathmandu. But the easiest way is to obtain this permit in Monjo at the entrance gate of the park. The permit costs NPR 3000 (approximately USD 3) per person. There are numerous checkpoints in the Everest region; therefore, carry this permit with you all the time during the trek.
This permit has been brought into practice since October 2018, replacing the old system of TIMS cards. The Khumbu municipality itself issues this permit at the cost of NPR 2000 (Approximately USD 2) per person.
You can’t obtain this permit in Kathmandu. You can purchase this permit from Monjo or Lukla. Each permit is valid for 10 days, and you can extend the validity of the permit by 10 days at NPR 1000 (approximately USD 9) per person. The fund is spent on the infrastructure development of the Khumbu region.
Required documents to obtain these permits

Beginners who have not trekked in higher altitudes before may feel the symptoms of altitude sickness from 2000 m above sea level. Whereas, some may feel absolutely normal during the entire trek. It is quite difficult to foretell how the body will react to higher altitude zones.
However, higher elevation can’t only be held responsible. Higher physical exertion due to rapid hiking and insufficient acclimatization days are also the major causes of the occurrence of altitude sickness. That’s why, we have set aside proper rest days in our itinerary.
The common symptoms you may feel during the trek include headache, tiredness, inability to sleep, changes in mood and irritation, dizziness, and loss of appetite. If you experience these symptoms, inform our guide who will assist you by giving you a tablet of Diamox. This medicine will relieve you from acute altitude sickness.
For minor headaches, you can take paracetamol. Still, if the symptoms don’t subside, inform your guide who may descend you to a lower altitude. In case of a need for urgent evacuation, our guide will make all the required arrangements.
We have discussed what to do in case you suffer from altitude sickness. Now we will explain how to protect yourself from altitude sickness. The best remedy to stop altitude sickness is adequate hydration. Therefore, try to drink 3 liters of water each trekking day.
We advise you to carry water purification tablets or water purifier for quick access to safe drinking water. Begin your trekking by drinking one liter of water. This will help start the process early in the day. Then carry two liters of water and drink that before lunch. Have garlic soup, ginger tea, and fruit juices, and hydrate your body as much as you can.
Along with hydration, proper nutrition is also needed for the prevention of altitude sickness and physical exertion. Our authentic Nepali diet of rice, lentil soup, and vegetable curry will give you all the energy that you need for a day hike.
For breakfast, have some bread and eggs for adequate protein. Sherpa stew is also a good option for adequate protein requirements during the trek. The stew contains meat and vegetables. Carry some chocolate bars, dried fruits, and snacks to eat along the trail.
